“Wool House”, Claire Jouanchicot

The Wool House is an experimental design project exploring the potential of Manech sheep wool, a rustic fiber from my family’s farm in the Basque Country, France. Once used for bedding and insulation, this wool has been largely abandoned by the modern textile industry.

My work aims to revalue this local, living material through a hybrid approach combining traditional craft, needle felting, bio-based stabilizers (gelatin, alginate), and digital fabrication tools. By creating textile surfaces, objects, and installations, I explore how wool can inhabit our everyday spaces in new ways—soft, flexible, and sustainable—while honoring the heritage and memory embedded in this fiber.

The project culminates in The Wool House, a space where wool becomes architecture, furniture, and functional objects, inviting us to rethink our relationship with materials, sustainability, and domestic life.
